The 14th Theme:
As ELEVEN Magazine focuses on maintaining the online platform and publishing our print edition for the very last time, we move into this new state of becoming — becoming a well-loved print magazine that will be engraved in the hearts of many, but also becoming a fresh online identity that will strive to new heights.
We experience becoming in many ways. We look back on the past and reflect on the obstacles that have shaped us. We also extend into the future by preparing ourselves for the obstacles we have yet to overcome and working towards becoming who we want to be. We reminisce about the footprints we have left behind and continue to follow the footpath we wish to take.
It is the very state of becoming that grounds us and opens us to many possibilities.
1. Change and Transition
The state of becoming turns every ending into a new beginning and a step towards an ongoing journey. When we are becoming, we constantly transition into the different stages of life and meet at the intersection between who we are and who we will become. When did you encounter changes? How did you feel during times of change? How did you cope with the unexpected? When did you realise you needed change?
“And He found you lost and guided [you]”
When we stumble upon the obstacles in life and face challenges that seem impossible to overcome, Allah’s guidance brings us out of the darkness and we move into the becoming of a new person. Have you ever felt lost or astray? How did you get out of dark moments or thoughts? Who or what helped you along your journey of renewal?
3. Weakness and Strength
“Verily, with every hardship comes ease”
The pain of hardship and loss may be almost too hard to bear, but it is from these vulnerable moments that we emerge stronger. When have you put your trust in Allah’s higher knowledge? How did it feel during times of darkness as you patiently waited for the light at the end of His tunnel? Did you ever experience a setback in life only to later see it as a blessing in disguise?
4. Motion and Growth
The only constant in this world is change, and since we are always experiencing change, we are constantly becoming. As we go through and grow through the motions, we find hope in even the smallest step forward. What do you consider as growth? What steps did you take to pursue your journey of growth? Given that growth is never linear, how did you cope with setbacks and failures?
In philosophy, becoming is the possibility of change in a thing that has being — that exists. Your becoming happens as a result of your existence. To become, would be to acknowledge your being in relation to God: How do we live in this world? Who are we becoming for? Who will we become and for what purpose? What will become of you if you were to die today?
