#Favourites: Surahs (Part 1)

The belief in the Qur’an as one of our Holy Books is one of the six articles of faith in Islam. It forms such a significant basis of our faith, not only for us to seek guidance, knowledge, and protection, but also comfort – to be close to Him by being close to His words.

In this series, some of our fellow NTU students share with us their favourite surahs and what it means to them. From the surahs we recite everyday in our prayers to the surahs with enriching historical stories behind them, let us learn more about the Qur’an and how we can make it a valuable part of our lives.

وَلَقَد يَسَّرنَا القُرآنَ لِلذِّكرِ فَهَل مِن مُدَّكِرٍ

And We have certainly made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?

(Al Qur’an, 54:17)

Let us all yearn and strive to be Muslims who hold close to the Qur’an, InshaAllah.

Khadiijah Shaik

1. What is your favourite surah?

Surah Al-Fatihah.

2. What does it mean to you personally?

This was the first surah I was taught to memorise, yet it is still the surah I am striving to remember and keep in mind (in terms of the reminders it contains).

3. Do you have a favourite ayah from it?

Verse 5. Whenever I recite this surah, this ayah in particular, would stand out the most. This is also the first ayah in the surah that Allah SWT puts us in the picture, where we converse with Him. Therefore, it personally allows me to engage in conversation with Allah SWT through both declaring my worship to Him and then seeking His help.

4. Are there certain times that you will listen to/recite it?

Like every other Muslim, I recite it 17 times daily, as part of our prayers. However, on days when I feel slightly under the weather, I would play it on repeat to soothe the pain till I fall asleep.

5. How does it make you feel every time you listen to/recite it?

Almost always, I would feel grounded again to my purpose in life. Towards the end of the surah, I feel lighter as I am reminded again and again that I could always surrender the fate of this dunya to Allah SWT.
